Auxiliary Officer George Starr was struck by a car and killed at 0400 hours while he tried to assist people who were injured in a serious traffic accident on the Virginia Beach-Norfolk Expressway (now I-264) ½ mile east of Independence Blvd.
Officer Starr was on his way home when he stopped to help at an accident scene caused by an impaired driver. He was in uniform, but had only his private vehicle and was the only officer on the scene at the time. Shortly after he arrived, another impaired driver going above the speed limit crashed into the original scene, killing both Officer Starr and a civilian woman who had also stopped to help.
Officer Starr volunteered with the agency for only three months and was in the U.S. Navy, assigned to a helicopter squadron at Norfolk Naval Station. He was survived by his wife, parents and three siblings.
